China Camp - Supplementary Images

The fan mill was/is not the only traditional way of winnowing - smaller scale winnowing can be done by hand, making use of a light wind to blow the lighter chaff to the side while heavier grains (or shrimp bodies) drop below. This process can be seen in this image of winnowing rice from a village in Hoiping District (Kaiping) in Guangdong Province, China in 2006.
